This centre calculates tidal information for all around the world. It also undertakes other oceanographic research. There is a lot of interesting and useful information on their website at http://www.pol.ac.uk/home/insight/ Of particular interest to me is the machine they used before the advent of computers, still very accurate today - see http://www.pol.ac.uk/home/insight/doodsonmachine.html
