The Gallery is in the foreground with Stocking Lane leading off to the left. The huge Calver Mill can be seen in the Background. Calver Mill was built on the site of a Corn Mill and opened as a Cotton Mill in 1778 ... by 1785 it had three storeys and after flood and fire damage was later re-built and re-opened in 1804 ... and operated as such until 1923. In the 1940s it was used for storage by the Ministry of Supply, then, from 1947, used as a factory unit manufacturing Stainless Steel Units. When that business closed the Mill later gained fame as 'Colditz Castle' for a TV Series. Finally it has now been converted into apartments with restricted access. See also ... Image
