The Penny Black (2) - sign, 14-18 Bull Ring, Kidderminster

The sign is modelled on the famous Penny Black postage stamp, which was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was introduced in May 1840. The pub is named the Penny Black in recognition of the fact that the idea of an adhesive stamp came from Sir Rowland Hill (1795-1879), who was born in Kidderminster. He remains one of the town's best known inhabitants. Image
