The two roads' intersection has long-standing importance: in pre-motorway days as the point at which the main route between southern Lancashire and West Yorkshire met Manchester's ring road and more recently as the route for traffic from the M62 towards Manchester's Eastlands complex. Originally Oldham Road was lined with terraced houses, with numerous shops at this intersection, including a cinema situated in the middle of the now vacant foreground land. A few shops survive on Oldham Road including an absolutely first rate Chinese takeaway.
