See Image St. John's was either the first or last church visited by mediaeval pilgrims (depending on their direction of travel) using the Pilgrim's Way between Winchester and Canterbury. Beggars would line the street hoping for alms from the pilgrims - hence the name for this road running north from St. John's Street. {Source: St. John's Church leaflet.}
