The buildings shown here are, collectively, part of the complex named Municipal Buildings, occupied by the City Council. At left, former town house, rare Georgian survival for this much eroded part of the Georgian New Town. Built 1781-4 and attributed to Charles Mountain senior. Ground floor unsympathetically altered 20th century. Three wide bays, three storeys with basement. Fine central entrance with Doric columns and entablature with reeded frieze, swags and an urn. The window above has a good recessed balustrade and triangular pediment. The modern part, right, was formerly the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages. The whole was demolished in 2013.
