This Art Deco building was erected in 1937 - as a temporary structure - and was extended in 1988 by the addition of a children's library at the rear. It replaced - after a gap of many years - the first branch library that Croydon opened, in Shirley, in 1890. This earlier facility closed in 1904 "through lack of interest".
