The canal is well equipped with individually designed seats at regular intervals. This one records the distances to the ends of the canal and the fares to be conveyed there in 1832. Using the National Archives currency converter, this is something like £1.50 in 2012 money to Edinburgh and £4.50 to Falkirk - considerably cheaper than today's bus or rail fare, and more environmentally friendly, though of course it took a lot longer. Or you could use the buying power converter at Measuring Worth, which suggests that is the equivalent of £18 in today's earnings to Edinburgh and £54 to Falkirk. Quite a discrepancy!
