The whole of the north section of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal from this lock no. 2 down to lock no. 20 had been closed for the previous week for inspection work to be carried out. In addition, lock no. 9 and lock no. 16 were to undergo extensive repairs over the next few weeks. This had effectively stopped all traffic on the canal, resulting in the build up of fallen leaves on the surface of the water, having nowhere to go.
