The origin of the appended term "en-le-Morthen" is disputed but I favour the theory that it recalls a bloody killing field of the tenth century when thousands of warriors from both the Saxon and Celtic/Viking sides were killed in the area during the Battle of Brunanburh (around 937 AD). The term may come from the Old French for "a place of death" and more famously follows the name of a larger village in the same area - Laughton-en-le-Morthen.
