This is a part of a £16m Millom project by water company United Utilities to help clean up the Duddon Estuary. The project includes installing a new 1.25km long pipe and new pumps as well as ultra-violet bug-killing equipment at the town’s sewage works. The UV disinfection plant is thought to be a first in England. Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve will also benefit with the addition of several ponds (more accurately called scrapes) for its Natterjack Toads. Construction at the old ironworks, which is now a nature reserve, has been planned carefully in close consultation with the nature reserve friends group to avoid harm or disruption to important wildlife habitats. The reserve is a stronghold for natterjack toads - of which there are less than 50 breeding colonies left in mainland Britain.
