The original station on this site was opened in 1863 as the terminus of the Blackpool & Lytham Railway, with the Preston & Wyre Joint railway from Preston having a separate terminus in Station Road. When the two companies were amalgamated, the B&L station was rebuilt in 1874 as a through passenger station. It is seen here, view west from Ballam Road bridge. The elegant former station building is currently used as the Station Tavern. (The P&WJR terminus was used for goods until the 1960s).
