Viewed from a stile on the north side of the A472, the main road through Monkswood. Google Translate offers "Large Rear" as the translation of Cefn Mawr, which illustrates the potential pitfalls of a simple translation facility. As is to be expected in Wales, there are many Welsh language place name elements that refer to the mountainous and hilly landscape. As well as common words such as mynydd (mountain), bryn (hill), allt (hillside) and rhiw (hill), words for parts of the body are also used to describe features of high ground. Thus cefn (back) refers to a mountain ridge or, as here, hill ridge.
