The Worshipful Company of Cutlers’ Hall on Warwick Lane. Ahead is Newgate Street whilst Ave Maria Lane lies behind the photographer. Their premises - opened in 1888 - are situated upon the site once occupied by the Royal College of Physicians. By the middle of the 18th century much of the London cutlery trade had moved to Sheffield where the supply of raw materials and water power was more conducive to the production of steel. As late as 1879 however, there were still some thirty Cutlers working in the City of London. The terracotta frieze (1887) by Benjamin Creswick depicts the four main processes of the cutler’s craft. Today the organisation functions as a charitable body.
