This cottage stands at the edge of the Allt Wen woodland and used to overlook a lake - Llyn Pen-yr-Allt - which provided a means of powering the now long defunct woollen mill at Bedw Argoed. One winter's night in the early 1950s after torrential rain the lake burst its retaining bank and disappeared downslope into Llyn Padarn leaving behind a muddy scar. Nature has long taken over and the site of the old lake is now a wooded swamp.
