With the former Beadle's car sales showroom (now a pub called The Flying Boat) behind the photographer, this is view along Spital Street with Orchard Street branching off to the left. The Gala Bingo Hall on the right was previously The Odeon Cinema. The long-fronted building on the left was a large Co-operative Departmental Store that opened in 1935 on land formerly occupied by Kidd's brewery. Its extensive premises extended to Hythe Street, the street linking High Street to the railway station area. It appears to have been sold.
