Considering the grandeur and elegance of their frontages the New Town dwellings in Queen Street were provided with only modestly sized plots to the rear which slopes steeply upwards towards Princes Street. The privately owned but communal Queen Street Gardens were provided at the front of the houses for leisurely outdoor strolls.
