The qualitative difference between the dwellings of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh can be easily exaggerated in accounts of the great transformation in housing that took place towards the end of the 18th century. Viewed from the rear, the elegance of the buildings of the New Town gives way to a surprisingly traditional look that would not be out of place in many smaller Scottish burghs.
