These terraced houses - stretching as far as the eye can see on both sides of this extremely long street - are known locally as 'The Buildings' or 'The Squares'. They were built between 1854-60 by the Barber Walker coal mining company for miners and their families to rent. D.H. Lawrence specifically mentioned Prince's Street his short story "Fannie & Annie" as the home of Mr Goodall. No doubt these houses represented a great improvement on the previous one-roomed thatched (tithed) miner's cottages.
