The Colston Hall concert venue is seen here on the left and Colston Tower on the right-hand side of Colston Street, as seen from Pipe Lane. Colston Tower is 63 m (205 ft) tall and has 15 floors of offices. Although it was completed in 1973 the clock was not added until 1996. Some Bristolian groups and individuals have expressed resentment towards the use of Edward Colston's name for buildings because of the fact that much of his financial success arose from his active involvement in the slave trade. Colston (1636–1721) was a Bristol-born merchant and Member of Parliament.
