The road north from Penmaen reaches Oakdale, a large village in Caerphilly county borough. Oakdale is unusual in this area in that there is no Welsh form of its name. The village of Oakdale was an early 20th century creation of industrialists who wanted to exploit the untapped coal reserves of this part of the Sirhowy valley. The fact that Oakdale was largely a planned village can still be seen in the shape of the village's central road (Central Avenue) and transverse roads making a horseshoe shape.
