The tower faces west along the axis of St John's Park, a road that divides either side of the church, leaving it effectively on a traffic island. The church, whose congregation is Anglican in the Evangelical tradition, was built in 1853 to the designs of Arthur Ashpitel. It is listed grade 2 (List Entry Number 1289727).
