Viewed across Maryport Street. A blue plaque http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3043472 records that Usk Prison was built in 1842. It was designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807-1880) on the model of Pentonville, London. The building has had various custodial uses, including the Monmouthshire County Gaol from 1870 to 1922. Later in the 20th century it was at different times a borstal, detention centre, youth custody centre and a young offenders institution. Grade II (star) listed in 1974. Since 1990, Usk Prison has been a Category C men's prison.
