Ferrybridge Lock

Ferrybridge Lock marks the start of the Ferrybridge to Goole canal section of the Aire and Calder Navigation. Above Ferrybridge the navigation is largely river navigation with short canal "cuts" to circumnavigate the more difficult river sections. The lock gates are closed, which indicates that the level of the River Aire is above normal. Boats wishing to pass from river to canal and vice versa have to wait for the locks to operate at such times. At times of normal or low river levels the Ferrybridge Lock gates are left open and the level in the canal is maintained by the lock gates at Goole.
