The line between Croydon and East Grinstead was opened on 10th March 1884 by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway and the South Eastern Railway. The section here where Riddlesdown Road and the London LOOP crosses it lies between Riddlesdown Tunnel and the viaduct over the Rose and Crown Chalk Pit.
