Trouble on the M1

Northbound just past Junction 21a. Taken at 00:17 BST, at this point we had been stationary for about 40 minutes, but the police officer in the car ahead had just removed the cones he had put out and gestured for us to move forward prior to allowing us to get on our way again. The nature of the incident was not apparent when we reached the site (indicated by the lights just to the right of the police car). The Fire engine which had passed on the hard shoulder about 30 minutes before was not to be seen and no damaged vehicles could be made-out in the darkness. I would not normally take, let alone submit, a picture though my windscreen, but I've never been at the head of a queue of traffic on a closed motorway before and am unlikely ever to be so again
