Some sixty years ago, a profound change came over this area. The south-side tram routes were all replaced by buses between 1950 and 1952, and the iconic Victorian Elephant & Castle public house - which should certainly have been listed - was demolished. However, in the Walworth Road, a few sad Victorian buildings remain, in shabby and unloved neglect.
