The former Central Library, by Greenock Burgh architect James Watson in 1970, dominates the south side of the square. The sculpture in the centre is the Stanley Spencer inspired "Men of the Clyde", by Naomi Hunt and Malcolm Robertson (Spencer was a war artist in the nearby Port Glasgow shipyards).
