A Liverpool bound train entering Hamilton Square station, Birkenhead. Note the brown platform fittings typical of subterranean Merseyrail stations (see also Image). The platform on which the photographer is standing is used only by trains heading towards Chester or Ellesmere Port; trains for New Brighton or West Kirby use a separate platform at (if memory serves) a higher level so that they can avoid crossing the line from Chester/Ellesmere Port on the level.
