Situated behind the shops and Turk's Head pub on the east side of the Market Place. This was originally a corn mill, which later became a foundry. Manufacturing has moved elsewhere in the town, but the buildings appear to be still in use (some history of the building on the foundry website : http://www.bondsprecisioncastings.com/history.aspx ). High Mill was built in 1767 by the engineer John Smeaton (more information on Visit Cumbria http://www.visitcumbria.com/pen/alston-mill.htm ). One of the buildings still contains the old waterwheel, some restoration work was done in the 1990s by the North Pennines Heritage Trust - photo and information here http://npht.com/projects/view.php?id=5 . There is currently no public access to the mill.
