An Dun Abu is Irish for "Up Down". The colours of the Down county GAA teams are red and black. GAA is predominantly supported by members of the nationalist community. The Mayobridge Ward which extends southwards from Barnmeen to Mayobridge along the axis of the B7 is strongly nationalist territory with some 85% of the population from a Catholic community background. This contrasts with only 32% in the neighbouring Rathfriland ward.
