Part of the original 1959 M1 construction plan was a "branch motorway" at either end to assist spread the traffic load. At the southern end the M1 ended at today's junction 5 (A41), with the M10 branch ending at the A5 south of St. Albans (now A5183). As part of reconstruction of the M1 between junctions 6a and 10, the M10 was downgraded to "A" road status as the A414 from May 1st, 2009.
