The West London Line, on which West Brompton station lies, was built along the line of one of London's lost rivers, Counters Creek. The Creek had been made navigable up to about this point as the Kensington Canal, but when the railway was built the canal was truncated to a short stub at Chelsea Harbour. Here, to the west of the railway bridge another bridge, crossing nothing, is probably a survivor of the days when the road had to climb over a watercourse.
