One of the "Abram Flashes", a series of smaller subsidence flashes alongside the south and west side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, between the Wigan Flashes and Pennington Flash. The area has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest SSSI. It is locally important for wintering waterfowl which use the whole Wigan Flashes complex, and lower water levels, particularly in autumn, can provide valuable feeding and roosting habitat for migrant waders.
