The special geography of Nailsworth includes several valleys through which substantial streams run. In centuries past water power was widely harnessed to provide energy to operate cloth mills of which Egypt Mill was just one. In 1675 when Hudson sold it, Egypt Mill comprised 2 fulling-mills, a gig-mill, and a dye-house.
