The public house was built as a coaching inn on land newly enclosed from the old Dicker Common after 1813 and next to a newly formed crossroads from which I guess it derived its name from. The construction of the Inn would eventually lead to the growth of a small hamlet built on former common land which now straggles along the A22. Viewed from the junction with Burgh Hill Road with The Cottage the smaller dwelling to the right of the inn.
