Once a prominent place just outside of the old city walls in the twelfth century, an inn has stood here almost ever since. Its history is long and varied: see http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/2097228037/ for a full description. In more recent times it was the favourite hostelry for workers in the Bristol Evening Post newspapers just across the junction, until the printing was moved out of town.
