A Commissioners' church which, despite its constrained budget, has been endowed with a certain grandeur via its lofty two-stage tower and Ionic portico. Built 1822-24, by Thomas Hardwick and finished by his son, Philip. Grade II* listed. The Church Building Commission was established in 1824 to oversee the building of more Anglican churches in urban areas which had experienced large increases in population due to the Industrial Revolution. It has been redundant since 1978 and is now offices.
