Both the pub and the road commemorate George Villiers, second Duke of Buckingham, who led a colourful life of military adventuring and Royalist plotting during and after the Civil War. Adopted and brought up by King Charles 1st, he was in the Royalist army by 1642, aged 14, AFTER having got a degree at Cambridge. One of his earliest exploits was involvement in The Earl of Holland's insurrection here at Kingston in 1648. There followed Exile, Romance, Plotting, Imprisonment in The Tower, Successful Comeback, Appointment as Gentleman of The Bedchamber and official Orb Carrier....etc, etc..
