There are a lot of functional unattractive bridges on the Trent and Mersey Canal in this part of the country. It is an accommodation bridge only leading from field to field, so when bridges built in the 1770s weaken, it is not surprising that the cheapest restoration option is adopted. Painting them white is a big mistake. For a year or so they look smart, then for decades they just look drabber and drabber. Someone did that on the Shropshire Union in the 1980s.
