A close up of some of the equipment at the huge extra high voltage electricity installation which has stood at this site for over 50 years. Operated by CE Electric UK, it is air-insulated, meaning some of the equipment is exposed. The 132kV substation serves 250,000 customers across East Yorkshire, including Hull, Beverley and Driffield. It is currently undergoing a £10m project to replace the existing equipment with gas-insulated switchgear. This work, to be completed in 2013, will mean a more reliable electricity supply to the region and will reduce the size of the site to just 20 per cent of the original area.
