Once the site of Brighton's main market as well as the 18th century town hall. That was pulled down in 1823 to build a new covered market which lasted until the 1930s when all the major markets were moved to a new purpose built building in Circus Street. The old building was then hollowed out to become a car park which it remained until the 1980s when the whole site was redeveloped for a new hotel, now the Thistle, on the left and Bartholomew House, new council offices to the right. The resulting square is filled by a Japanese restaurant but seems to be a sterile and empty place on a Sunday, the only visitors were a couple of skateboarders.
