Close-up of the motif of the Worksop and Retford Brewery. This motive is above the arch which leads into the ex-brewery workshops. The company motive, an iron cross superimposed on either oak leaves or an oak tree illustrates the, then, use of the Iron Cross as symbol of health. The Iron Cross was originally the symbol of the Teutonic Knights, a crusading military order founded in the 12th century. It was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals.
