One of three black towers (known enigmatically as 'the Black Towers') of Richard Seifert & Partners's redevelopment of the station in 1974-78 (another is partly visible behind, see also: Image] and Image]). It is faced with "Rustenburg Bon Accord Gabbro" (information courtesy of UCL's Earth Sciences Department). All three were built for British Rail, but I think they are now largely occupied by other companies. A few years ago Seifert's work was to be swept away, but now it appears it will just be getting a make-over. This could end up being a greater indignity.
