Cutting through "Church Common" Walthamstow

This cutting lies between East Avenue (where the picture was taken) and Vestry Road (the bridge in the distance). When the Chingford Railway came in 1870 the Great Eastern Railway needed to cut through the middle of Church Common. The church insisted that the G.E.R. built a tunnel under the field but this would have been too expensive. A compromise was made and the railway were allowed to purchase half the field and make a cutting on condition that they provided another field. This they did in Selborn Road where Walthamstow Central bus station now stands.
