Access to medieval burghs was by means of gateways that are often called ports (such an arrangement provided a measure of security, and would also have facilitated the collection of tolls, and so on). The name of this area signifies that this was once the western point of entry into the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow. Across the road, on the left, is the Image; to its right is the Black Bitch Tavern (also shown in Image), which takes its name from the dog that appears on Linlithgow's coat of arms. On the near side of the road, on the right, the Image sculpture is located near the trees.
