Originally built as Swan Downer School in 1867 to replace an older and smaller premise in Gardner Street that had opened in 1816. The school was named after Dr Swan Downer, a wealthy london trader, who set up the school as a charity to educate underprivileged and working class children and continued in operation until closure in 1939. For the next thirty years it was used offices until its conversion into a nightclub in 1969 which it still operates as today. For more information on the shop on the right see Image
