This area is considered to be part of the medieval village associated with the former Bishop's Manor house Image Keys to the Past: http://www.keystothepast.info/article/10339/site-Details?PRN=D2505 A silver religious artefact known as the Wolsingham Cross, dated to the early C16th, was found here in 1840 and is now held in the Treasury of Durham Cathedral.
