Shortlands station was originally opened by the West End of London & Crystal Palace Railway on 3rd May 1858, when it was named Bromley. The station was enlarged in 1892-94. The bridge over Beckenham Lane can be seen just beyond the end of the platform. Eurostars came through the station until 2007 and in the far distance can be seen the start of the dive-under pair of lines. This was constructed in 2002 to enhance the existing network for the opening of the first section of the high-speed Link to the Channel Tunnel. Now that Eurostars no longer use this route, the work was probably a little excessive.
