Now a Wetherspoon's pub, this building was for many years the county court. The use of the St Matthews Hall name, which dates back to the original purpose of the building, is reported to have upset the clergy at St Matthew's Church who apparently did not want the church's name associated with binge drinking. Why the outdoor lights are blazing away on a sunny afternoon is a mystery.
